" Back in the 60/70s many people emigrated from the UK to NZ on the assisted passage scheme - £10 poms they became known as. They arrived with very little, and not much of an idea of what to expect beyond a few grainy black and white promotional videos. My parents made that move, and this painting references the building of homes around Sunnynook Road, Auckland circa 1970 - showing an image of a man reading his Neil’s Group kit home plan on the ground his home would be built on. From a time when new neighbours pitched together and helped dig the ground, lay concrete on each other’s driveways and build communities. "
